Japan's Strategy for Sustainable Food System got off to a good start in 2021

Date: 3 April 2023

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) announced the progress status of the strategy MeaDRI (Measures for achievement of Decarbonization and Resilience with Innovation), a strategy for a sustainable food system.

The strategy includes several goals such as 50% reduction in risk-weighted use of chemical pesticides, which has similar targets to EU GreenDeal.

The reduction of about 9% in risk-weighted use of chemical pesticides was achieved in 2021, compared to the goal of 10% reduction by 2030.

However, MAFF concluded that “This is thought to be due to special situation limited to that year, such as a decrease in agrochemical production and shipments due to the international stagnation of agrochemical raw material logistics caused by COVID-19”.

MAFF continues to encourage to reduce the risk by altering to low risk pesticides, increasing in organic farming and so on.
