Gene edited waxy corn notified in Japan

Date: 29 March 2023

Waxy corn developed by Corteva through gene editing technology was notified to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) on March 20, 2023.
By knocking out the Wx1 gene in the waxy corn producing enzyme for amylose synthesis by CRISPR-Cas9, the starch in the gene edited plant contains only amylopectin.
Waxy corn varieties produced by conventional breeding have been used for food and industrial purpose.

We will continue to advise our customers on Japan’s regulation on gene edited products helping to expand their business opportunities in Japan.
